National Finals: Goodwood
19th October 2008

We came second in the first F24+ championship final round & thus
finished 2nd in the championship too. Our driver, Hannah, followed our
pre-discussed tactics perfectly, slipstreaming the favourite (TSR4) for
90 minutes, but we couldn't quite manage to overtake in a frenetic last
lap; losing out in the end by less than half a second. This was already
a brilliant result for the team & the way the race unfolded tactically
was tremendously exciting, as was the final sprint for the line down the
finishing straight in front of the grandstand. The F24 final began with
the pre-race favourite & pole sitter "Phoenix" from Seaford College
hurtling into the lead. Our new car, Zebedee, took it steady and after
the first 2 hours was in 3rd/4th. Then the race stopped with a red flag
for a spectator who had taken ill. After the restart Phoenix was broken
and lost about 20 minutes while it was fixed, and at this point Zebedee
surged into the lead. With 90 minutes left we were 2 laps clear and
after an unbelievably tense final 40 minute stint we took the chequered
flag, with Rotary Racer from Chipping Sodbury 2nd and TSR2 3rd. Our race
distance was over 115 miles, a massive (10mile) improvement on our
previous best, and we also won:
Fastest lap (Brian - 3m 54s)
Best engineered car (Zebedee)
University of Southampton Aerodynamics prize
"Gold" distance award for Zebedee
That is the end of a gloriously successful season for the Sandbach High
School "C.A.U.C." Greenpower team. Hopefully we can continue improving
the cars next year, and progress towards a "platinum" distance award
(125 miles)
